Anyone for a Spot of Charity Bashing?

Charity-bashing has become something of a national sport in the UK in recent years, and politicians and the media sometimes seem to be vying with each other to find fresh reasons to have a bash. Eric Pickles, the blunt Yorkshireman who is Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has, for example, recently proclaimed that all his department’s grants to “pressure groups and supposed charities” will henceforth include a clause that prohibits any of the money being used for lobbying, in a very wide definition of that term.
